TEHRAN – Iran’s power generation capacity will rise to 75 gigawatts (GW) per day by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2016).

The country’s power generation capacity stands currently at 73GW, the Energy Ministry said in a report.

Power plants in Iran generated 62GW of electricity on average per day in spring, a 1.5 percent rise year on year.

Iran plans to triple its annual electricity exports from the currently 8 billion kilowatt hours (Bkwh) to 25 Bkwh by the next three years, according to Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Houshang Falahatian.

Falahatian said the country puts priority on the neighboring and regional countries as the main destinations for electricity exports.

Iran currently exports electricity to Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iran has prepared a plan which could increase the efficiency of its power plants to 45 percent from the current 38 percent by 2025.
